The way I'm starting to see it is that Nikon is really aiming towards the whole "anyone can be a photographer" thing, which is frankly a bit insulting. I don't want a DSLR that will do it all for me. That takes all the fun out of it. For me, the fun of photography is figuring everything out, not point, shoot and, oh! lookie there I'm amazing! Not to mention all this fancy stuff that they're trying to add to their cameras is lost on people who just want a simple point and shoot (I know this from Ted, who dragged me to every store that sold cameras so I could tell her what was what and whether or not she needed it).
So, the way I see it is Canon is more professional geared where as Nikon is more point and shoot geared (If I ever get enough money for a point and shoot those will most likely be my first choice).
There, and for moms who want perfect pictures of their children, pay a professional (that IS what they are there for) and don't waste your time buying a DSLR that you won't even use all that it is capable of. Fancy does not equal necessary.
By the way don't get me started on MACs. We could be here all week
